The recent floods in Nashville had White Rock teens Sam & Luke a little terrified. While Music City experienced severe thunderstorms and the worst flooding in 150 years, the musical Remedios brothers were huddled inside their hotel room writing songs for a debut album.
"For a while there, the weather was pretty terrifying to us," they said in an emailed note to the Now. "We kept waiting for the windows to shatter, or worse."
Colin Linden is producing the material, with 11 new songs assembled. Four of the tunes were written collaboratively with Nashville songwriting heavyweights Gary Nicholson and Tom Hambridge, who have worked with the likes of Peter Frampton, Etta James, B.B. King, Los Lonely Boys and Ringo Star.
During recording sessions, the guys were thrilled to work with celebrated bass player Bob Babbitt -- an original "Funk Brother" featured in the great documentary film, Standing in the Shadows of Motown.
As of Sept. 7, the CD Standing in a Room (the working title) will be available on CD Baby and iTunes, with hopes of some songs posted at samandluke.com by Aug. 1.
Meanwhile, Surrey-raised Lisa Brokop is among artists who have contributed to "City of Dreams," a song and video recorded to aid flood-relief efforts in Nashville. The "We Are the World"-style project came together after Canadian singer/songwriter Victoria Banks penned the song, after seeing the flood devastation in her neighbourhood. She posted a simple guitar/vocal slideshow of the damage on YouTube, and it went viral. Other Canadians involved are George Canyon and Michelle Wright, among others.
LILITH FEST MOVED TO WEST VAN
So long, Pitt Meadows airport, hello West Van waterfront.
The Lilith festival is on the move, given less-than-expected ticket sales for the Canada Day concert that features Sarah McLachlan, Sugarland, Sheryl Crow and others blessed with estrogen.
The July 1 gig is now happening at Ambleside Park, the West Vancouver site of a McLachlan performance last fall -- and not all that far from her home.
All previously purchased tickets will be honoured at the new venue. The new seating plan will closely mirror that of Pitt Meadows Airport, with ticketholders being automatically moved to comparable seats.
"The original intent was to host the event at the new large-scale concert site in Pitt Meadows, but we have decided that Ambleside is a more appropriate venue for the audience size," Nettwerk boss Terry McBride told the media. "We appreciate the support that was given to us from the community of Pitt Meadows; however, showcasing this event in the most fitting setting is what led us to the change."

'BUDDY' ROCKS AT THE STANLEY
The Buddy musical on stage at the Stanley theatre in Vancouver is a time-warp kind of production that keys on the music of -- you guessed it -- Buddy Holly.
As the Texan behind the glasses, Zachary Stevenson offers a believable version of the 1950s star, from reluctant country crooner to doomed airplane passenger.
My biggest kick was seeing Holly in studio with his Crickets (Jeremy Holmes, Scott Carmichael and Jeff Bryant), cranking the volume, adding rock 'n' roll mojo to the band's sound and tinkering with instruments to make songs memorable. And yeah, all the hits are played.
At one point in the show, Red Robinson does a voiceover that echoes his days as DJ on CKWX radio station, giving the production some "local" content. In Surrey on Saturday (June 12), Robinson makes a guest appearance at a seniors wellness fair at Fleetwood Community Centre, 15996 84th Ave. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., with the radio pioneer scheduled to be on site at 11 a.m. Call 604-501-5030 for more details.
