Talented brothers Sam & Luke Remedios are hitting the road on a musical journey that could make or break them.
The White Rock-based siblings are about to travel south down the coast and then make their way to Nashville, where they recorded their impressive Standing in A Room debut album (on iTunes and elsewhere) with Colin Linden.
Starting in mid-July, the trip could last a year, 18 months - maybe longer. Sam is 20 years of age and Luke just 16, but he finished high school early (online, via Surrey Connect) to make a career of music. Likewise, Sam is "on leave" from studies at UBC (University of British Columbia).
"We want to write as many songs as we can, meet as many killer musicians as we can, play as many gigs as we can, and then wait and see what happens," Sam says.
No question, full-time work on the road is a tough grind, but the brothers have help from devoted parents Ken and Jude Remedios, who quit jobs and sold their house and belongings in order to fund the lengthy, and probably life-changing, trip in the family SUV, with pet cat Snowball in tow.
"It takes a lot of years of hard work to become an overnight success," Sam adds. "Right now, we feel we're up to the challenge."
Sam & Luke first turned heads a couple years ago when they won a talent contest staged by White Rock Blues Society. From there, the stages have grown in size and number, leading to gigs at high-profile places (with some high-profile players), including Bluebird Café in Nashville, The Viper Room in Los Angeles and the best venues in Vancouver.
Their impending adventure won't be all that organized. There is some flying by the seat of their pants in the plans, which include staying with friends and family, renting cheap hotel rooms and using free internet access to book gigs.
"We just want to hit jams and open mics," Luke says, "but of course we hope to pick up paying gigs as well. Our goal is to spread the word about our music one show at a time."
In one final performance before they take off for the States, Sam & Luke go semi-acoustic for an afternoon gig Sunday, June 26 at West Beach Bar & Grill, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Marine Drive and Elm Street, White Rock. It's all-ages, no cover - and everyone is invited to bid the brothers goodbye (for now). Follow their progress online at samandluke.com.
LANG IN LATEST 'LOOK' MAG
The great new Sing it Loud album from k.d. lang and her Siss Boom Bang band is reason for the Alberta-raised singer to headline Burnaby Blues + Roots Festival, set for Saturday, Aug. 13 at beautiful Deer Lake Park. Lang and band recorded the return-to-roots album in Nashville and will hit a good number of outdoor festivals in Canada this summer.
I had the great fortune of interviewing lang recently for a cover feature in Look magazine - distributed with the Now this week. On the phone from her Los Angeles home, lang talked about riding her motorbike on the streets of Fort Langley (where she still owns a home), her daily ritual to keep her amazing voice in top shape and what it was really like to sing Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" at the 2010 Winter Olympics opening ceremony in Vancouver.
Check it out in the latest Look, which also offers a comprehensive guide to events in the region this summer.
NEWS AND NOTES
A couple hours south of here, the cozy outdoor concert venue at Tulalip Resort Casino is a stage for The Doobie Brothers, George Thorogood, Pat Benatar, Smokey Robinson and Kenny Rogers this summer. Details of hotel/concert packages are online at www.tulalipcasino.com.
? I'm looking forward to this: The new animated movie Cars 2, in theatres June 24, features The Cars' hit "You Might Think" redone by Weezer, one of the best power-pop bands around.
? If you're like me and loved Crazy Heart, you'll rejoice to news that actor Jeff Bridges, who played faded country star Bad Blake in the flick, will release his self-titled debut album on Aug. 16, on Blue Note Records. Expect plenty of Crazy Heartworthy songs, as Bridges is recording the album with producer T Bone Burnett, his musical collaborator for the film.
